CPAP battery backup: how many nights will it last?
Pick your machine and settings to see how many nights each power station runs your CPAP, and how big a battery you need for an outage.
By Brian Adrian · Updated October 21, 2026
A typical CPAP uses about 35 W with the humidifier off and about 80 W with it on. A 1,000 Wh class power station like the Jackery Explorer 1000 v2 runs it for about 3.1 nights without the humidifier, or 1.4 nights with it.
How long each power station lasts
| Power station | Capacity | Can start it? | Lasts |

Runtime = 85% of rated capacity (inverter losses) ÷ average watts. "Can start it" checks continuous output and surge rating against your choice. Specs from manufacturers; tap a model to check its price.
How to make your CPAP battery last longer
- Turn off the heated humidifier and heated tube during outages if you can sleep comfortably without them. It's the single biggest saving.
- Use the DC outlet with your CPAP maker's own DC cord or converter, if one exists for your model. It skips the inverter, which wastes roughly 10–15% of the energy.
- Keep it plugged in, in UPS mode. Leave the CPAP plugged into the power station and the station plugged into the wall. If the grid drops, a fast switchover (10–20 ms) keeps the CPAP running without waking you.
- Recharge during the day from solar panels or a car if the outage lasts. See which models refill fastest in our solar generator guide.
- This page estimates battery runtime. It is not medical advice. Ask your doctor or equipment supplier before changing how you use your therapy, including turning off humidification.
- If you depend on oxygen or another life-sustaining device, register with your electric utility's medical priority program and have a plan to go somewhere with power.
- Never run a gas generator indoors or in a garage to power a CPAP. Carbon monoxide can kill while you sleep.
What to look for in a CPAP power station
- Fast UPS switchover (20 ms or less) so the machine doesn't restart when the power cuts.
- A 12 V DC car-style outlet for your CPAP's DC cord.
- Quiet operation: it sits next to your bed. Battery stations are silent except for a small fan under heavy load.
- Enough capacity for two nights: outages often last longer than one night. The calculator above shows the size for the nights you choose.

Frequently asked questions
How long will a power station run a CPAP?
Divide the usable battery (about 85% of its rated Wh) by your CPAP's average watts times the hours you sleep. With the humidifier off, a typical CPAP uses about 35 W, or 280 Wh per 8-hour night, so a 1,000 Wh class power station lasts about 3.1 nights. With a heated humidifier (about 80 W) it lasts about 1.4 nights.
How do I find how many watts my CPAP uses?
Look at the power supply brick: it lists its maximum output, often 65 W or 90 W. That is the most it can draw, not what it uses all night. Many machines also show energy or "usage" data, and your manufacturer's manual lists typical consumption at different pressures. If in doubt, use the higher option in the calculator.
Should I turn off the humidifier during a power outage?
If you can sleep comfortably without it, yes. The heated humidifier and heated tube usually use more power than the machine itself, so turning them off can more than double how many nights a battery lasts.
Is it better to use the DC outlet or the AC outlet?
If your CPAP maker sells a DC power cord or converter for your model, powering it from the station's 12 V DC outlet avoids the inverter and wastes less energy, so the battery lasts longer. Only use the manufacturer's own DC accessory.
What is UPS mode and do I need it for a CPAP?
Some power stations can stay plugged into the wall with the CPAP plugged into them, and switch to battery in a few milliseconds if the power cuts. With a fast switchover (around 10–20 ms) the CPAP keeps running without waking you. It's the most useful feature for CPAP users in areas with frequent outages.
